The dems should take the debate to floor of congress now and call the GOP out on its collusion for higher prices...

Getting back to gas prices... maybe Obama should have the Justice department examine any ties between the congress and the speculators...... since the GOP loves more and more speculators...and higher and higher gas prices --- when they are causing the higher prices...

The party not in power will always attack the party holding the presidency. Now worse than ever. That's why having a multi-party system (and not just shades of one or the other) would help. It would allow to break up the hardened fronts.

Focus2... interesting but you forgot...CFTC has been blocked for years by its Bush appointees. And that is the same commission the GOP has been trying to defund for years.
To do their job, the blocks have to be removed and the defunders voted out out.
Anything less means the gas prices will still rise.... THANKS TO THE GOP!!!

IIRC, we first hit $4+/gallon gasoline under GWB and nothing happened. Frankly when are people going to realize there is really nothing the president, or any government official for that matter, can do. This is a free market. On the rare occasions the government did try some kind of controls, such as in the late 1970's, we suddenly has shortages (artificial granted, but still fuel was hard to get).

GOP sees chance to attack Obama on rising gas prices And gas prices will continue to go up as the oil is refined into fuel and exported to other countries for additional profits. Big oil will sell fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices, there will be NO price reduction for the cost of fuel or natural gas IN the US. Barry will support natural gas and oil production for sale to help pay for his *spending gone wild* addiction. The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! Speculators, manipulators and the banks continue to unfairly and unjustly make the driving public pay higher prices at the pump for their benefit. How’s that ‘hope and change’ thingy working out for you today? Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle is, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using ‘other’ forms of transportation or car pool to lower your cost for transportation. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

Last year the president took an approach to at least eliminate some of the scalping of futures that drive up prices. He created the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force to work under the Department of Justice to specifically target oil futures manipulation.
http://www.forbes.com/2011/05/18/oil-futures-manipulation.html
This of course is not a solution to the runaway prices but it will help.

For those who think presidents control gas prices... The gas/oil price surge under Obama is not his doing as it was not Bush's fault either when it surged back in 2007-2008.
The cause is from deregulation that occurred during Clinton and Bush's first years in office. Also known as the 'Enron Loophole'. It allowed the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE)to form. ICE is composed of Big Oil, top banksters including Mobil, Shell, Exxon, Conoco, Phillips, BP North America, Enron, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Chase Manhattan Bank, Citigroup and the American Petroleum Institute. ICE commodities exchange operates out of the country, out of our federal jurisdiction. Unregulated they can manipulate crude prices to the extreme. This is why we were paying $1.50/gal around yr 2000 and now near $4/gal.
http://www.alternet.org/story/104133/
Other factors also currently causing crude to rise is the geo-political factors abroad with Iran, Europe and China. Also as the economy improves here in the U.S. among other countries like China, speculators will buy up crude futures at increased prices based on the assumption that crude products will be in much greater demand.

Let's talk about economic recovery!
Lets see just in the last few weeks we have had better-than-expected job growth, lower unemployment rates across the US, the housing market continues to improve, a surging stock market (when was the Dow near 13,000 in your memory) and a payroll tax deal that will put more money in the pockets of millions of Americans.
Let's talk about what the President could do!
> Nationalize the Oil & Gas companies, set gas prices each morning over breakfast you would love. > Shield oil companies from paying their fair share of taxes, thus protecting their profits, handouts and subsidies every year. (Oh wait, that is what the Republicans want!) > Invade, thus eliminate the turmoil in the Middle East. > Invade, take over the nuclear program so as to eliminate tensions with Iran. >Pay off all of the European debt. >Magically control the earthquake and tsunami which happened in Japan.
Bottom line...we live in a global economy. Conditions around the world and the price of the dollar are what dictates the price of oil. To open up some of the Oil & Gas reserves we have, is dubious at best; as we are selling Oil overseas at a nice profit since we have lots of it! Oil prices here at home follow global oil prices... it's that simple.
If both Dems AND Repubs really want to "rock" the boat and "prove" that they are not in the pockets of big oil, end the unnecessary subsidies that benefit NO ONE but the oil companies and apply that money toward paying down the debt.
RIGHT NOW. Funny how the GOP bulls eye on President Obama keeps moving; It's the Economy...oops, it's the jobs...oops, the President has done nothing about terrorism...oops, it's rampant welfare...oops, it's Equal Rights...oops, it's Women's Health and contraceptives...oops, Oh Wait!!! Let's go after him about gas prices! YES!!!YES!!! (Speaker Boehner sneering..."We just won't say WE have our hands in the oil pot.")
To quote rx7racerca who nailed it...
"Opening up offshore drilling can contribute to greater oil self-sufficiency for the US, but will not make a significant difference in prices - the potential growth in supply is a drop in the bucket against world demand that is outstripping supply - and since it is a global market, US consumers pay world prices, whether the oil is domestic or imported."
Peace......wisdom.... think for yourself.....

Politicians are always looking for ways/ideas to use to go against their competitors, especially when there is an election about to come. Here is a great example. The only thing is that after one is elected and they enter office, the proposals they made will enter a slow process.
Don't forget, these politicians are running for the office of president of the United States, which is a nation. They are not running for office as the president of the oil companies(Exxon-Mobile, & especially OPEC) who are the ones who market it!!

combined with tensions over Iran and continuing European debt worries — could present a more significant challenge to America’s recovery, they say."
This is a crime against humanity and the economic recovery of our country! I welcome the debates about oil prices by the Republicans. I hope they stir up interest in getting something done, like making the CFTC do their job! Limiting speculation has been on their agenda for years now and they do nothing just like the new Tea Party Republicans that take Big Oil money by the millions. I don't care who gets credit for it just get it done! The statement about oil or gas prices being out of our control, I don't accept. Its time for a congressional hearing. The need to forget the campaigning and earn their keep.

More oil has been pumped in the US in 2011 than during any year of Bush. However it was exported by the oil companies. Imagine how loudly the Republicans would have cried if he had acted to prevent oil exports.
